dr. martens - old school meets new school.

the old british boot makers have made a big resurgence. Mixing utility-style durability, and innovative comfort utilizing the famous 'airwair bouncing soles', the company has sold over 100 million pairs of Dr. Martens shoes from 1960 to 2010, in over 250 different models.

Docs have come a long way in the 54 years since their inception. It used to be, that if you were planning on purchasing a pair, you also had to plan on breaking them in over the course of several days before wearing them for too long, or you'd be forced to cut off your feet by the end of the day, to prevent anymore pain and disfiguration.

No more. Dr. Martens have evolved with time, and now provide a comfortable experience straight out of the box. You must no longer fear for the well-being of your feets.

To be honest, I think my favorite part about these classic boots (besides representing English skinhead/hooligan culture) is the quality and durability of the product. I'm a huge proponent of well-made goods that are built to last as long as you do. It's the same reason I wear selvedge denim and seek out handmade products constructed in the U.S. Dr. Martens are no cheapo throw-away boots. You definitely get what you pay for.

brit-hop playlist.

i've never really been much of a rap guy. it's not that i don't respect the classics, nor do i disrespect the craft, it just hasn't been my cup o' tea for awhile.

Having said that, why in the world would you trust my judgment when it comes to rap? Allow me to ease your concern with some facts:

  • First of all, don't you dare question me if you know what's good for you
  • Being a world-renowned music expert, I know what good music sounds like regardless of genre
  • I was really into rap in like 6th and 7th grade
  • I know all of the words to one Ludacris song, one Lil' Wayne song, and one Dr. Dre song
  • The first CD I ever bought was MC Hammer's Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'em from a garage sale
  • I know Andrew Gibson

I mean, I think we can all agree I'm pretty hip to the 'rap game' as they say. So, if you're finished badgering me about my obviously sufficient qualifications, let's move on.

I feel as though I should preface this playlist. This carefully ordered selection of songs is no ordinary rap playlist. This is a playlist of british rap and hip-hop songs that shall thus be called 'brit-hop' (i totally invented that name). Surprisingly the UK has quite a few unique genres of rap and hip-hop. there's the standard gangster rap, the party rap, the hip-hop with a message, the grime (fast rap over drum & bass), the hipster hip-hop, or 'hipster-hopster'. This playlist is not aimed at presenting you with the best at any particular genre; it is simply a collection of brit-hop songs that i've been listening to a lot lately.

There's just something about a british accent that completely changes the game. I'll warn you that a few of these videos put out a slightly behind-the-crowd late 90s/early 2000s vibe, but even still, it's most excellent. But enough of me talking, how bout you start listening.
