glass animals.

I've been in kind of a weird mood this morning. Maybe it's the fact that I injured my back so I'm walking like an 84 year-old man and I smell like an Icy Hot factory. Whatever the reason, a weird mood calls for a semi-weird music groove.

Meet Glass Animals: a newish indie rock band from Oxford (that's in Europe). They're videos are weird as fuhhhh. Also some of their beats and instrumentations are weird. And some of the build-ups feel weird. A lot of weirdness going on that makes for a weirdly awesome overall groove. You'll dig 'em.

Mumford Monday.

Mumford & Sons debuted another song over the weekend from their new electric album 'Wilder Mind' set to release on May 4th. And since I'm so curious to see how successful this attempt at a new sound will be, you get to be curious as well.

That makes three songs from the album that are now available for your listening pleasure. So let's listen to them all right now plus an interview about the album.

Side note: I still think these dudes have impeccable style and it's funny to see how transitioning from strictly indie folk music to electric indie rock seems to also be influencing that style. Still dapper as fuh, though.

book on tapeworm.

do you like incredible vocals?

do you also like harmonies featuring incredible vocals from multiple people?

do you also like well-written compositions with unique instrumentation and beautiful lyrcis?

if you answered 'yes', 'yeah', 'yup', 'yep', 'yah', 'yaaaaaaaas', or 'si', to any of the above questions, then I've got a present for you. If you answered 'no' to any of the above, then you're simply the worst.

check out some songs from the provo, utah-based band, Book on tapeworm below.

npr tiny desktop concert playlist.

There's a reason that going to live performances is so much better than listening to a studio-recorded album. There's something about seeing raw emotion and intensity during an in-person show that you lose when you simply listen to an mp3 or cd or record or whatever. That's one of the reasons I love the npr tiny desktop concert series. check out a few of my current favorites. Disclaimer: most of these are acoustic versions of the originals.

mumford & sons plugs in.

Mumford & Sons has announced the release of their new album Wilder Mind and with it, a big step for them: they're going electric. My first assumption was that this was an answer to criticisms of the band being one dimensional, and writing songs that all sound the same guitar strumming + banjo + harmonies + kick drum(partially true). But here's what the band had to say about it: "We spent 2014 writing and recording this record. It's been a liberating and unifying experience for us as a band, and we're proud of what's come out. It was about songs, first and foremost. And then of course the sound we felt supported those songs best. It was fun."

Take a listen to the first single from the album: Believe (make sure you at least get to the 2-minute mark before making your decision).

It's hard for me to decide if I actually like this or not. To be honest, when I listen to it, knowing that it's Mumford & Sons, I assume that this album is just an effort to stay current and I tend to dislike it. I don't like the idea of a band changing just to stay popular.

However, if I block all that out, and pretend the song comes from a band I've never heard before, I find it catchy, and well composed and I dig it. I'll have to wait and see jhow the rest of the album plays out, but for now I'm optimistic. What do you think?
