is there something to that top button?

i was recently asked the other day why i button my shirt all the way up.

it was an unexpected quesiton that i have never been asked and it caught me off guard.

i had just met her and we were talking about how she hates handshakes, that’s why she hugged me. and then she pauses for a moment, looks at me with a serious, should-i-ask-this-question-look, and then goes for it.

“Can I ask you something?”

Which, at first, made me wonder what the heck is she going to ask me? I’m almost certain I’d never met her before, let alone seen her, so I know I hadn't said something stupid to offend her or hit on her (but not really). What does she want to ask me?

So I said, “Shoot.”

She then looks (from what I could tell) up and down my body (probably just my shirt) and asks, “why do you button your top botton? i’ve seen a couple people do it and i don’t get it.”

I was not expecting this question. it kind of didn’t seem like a real question – like she was messing with me or something. I think i even reached up to see if the top button on my shirt was even buttoned (it was, it always is, I’m not even sure as to why i checked because i knew it was).

My well thought out response to her initial question was, “what?”

To which she replied, “is it some kind of, like, secret thing i just don’t know about or have some meaning? Like only certain people do it or something?”

This made me laugh a little because then i knew she was being serious. She wasn't messing with me and genuinely wanted to know.

I shook my head and told her, “No. It’s just a style thing.”

She then asked if it was a RVCA shirt because apparently they have one that looks just like the one I was wearing. Once I told her it was a J.Crew shirt she then dubbed me J.Crew and called me that for the rest of the night.

This made me think about button ups and people buttoning them all the way up. I started to think about all my buddies that wear button ups regularly and all of them button the top button too. This was normal practice to me, almost second nature to just button it all the way up.

When I think back, I honestly can’t remember a time when I didn’t button the top button. It was only a couple years ago that I moved button ups into the regular rotation, but even then it was all the way to the top.

My curiosity got the best of me so I turned to the one place I knew would have answers (no, not google) – Tumblr. I searched ‘button up’ and found a healthy mix of gentlemen with their top buttons buttoned and plenty of Pitti worthy gentlemen without their shirts buttoned all the way up.

It all comes down to style – how do you want to look? How do you want your shirt to feel? How come this top button is choking me? Every man has his own look and style. That’s what makes this whole 'fashion' thing interesting and unique. The style that everyone brings to the table.

drop the collar.

it's a new year and that means it's time to try something new. let's start with that collar on your shirt.

have you ever heard of a collarless shirt? a mandarin collar? a stand collar? a banded collar? a cadet collar? a nehru collar? all of these are the basically the same type of collar with a different name. it all means you won't have a formal collar that's folded down onto your shirt and you definitely won't be wearing a tie with this style of button up.

this new year is a chance to try and introduce a few new pieces into your sartorial arsenal. change things up and show people you aren't a one collar pony with one of these shirts. who knows? maybe you'll never go back to a collar and a tie again.
