10 tips to vintage shopping.

Came across this article by askmen.com. check it out for some simple tips on vintage shopping.

We realize that not every man is a vintage shopper and most have no idea where to start. That's why we spoke to David Ornstein, founder of Manhattan Vintage and a vintage expert of 40 years, who gave us 10 quick tips to help vintage shopping virgins become overnight pros — and maybe give you some new pointers if you think you're an expert already.

1. Dress Comfortably
Come prepared by wearing shoes or boots that you can slip right off, unbelted pants and not too many layers. This way you're more willing to try things on as sizing standards have changed over the years.

2. Pay Close Attention To The Condition And Materials Of Your Finds
Look at everything really carefully and thoroughly, and ask yourself how it feels. Ornstein says a good method is to close your eyes and feel the garment. "If it's not right you'll know it." He recommends always looking for natural fabrics, metal zippers and union labels printed in blue.

3. Check The Label
Labels tell you the country of origin and fiber content, and the country can tell its age. From oldest to newest: Japan, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Pakistan, Vietnam, Korea and China.

4. Bartering Is OK
Dealers don't mind it if you ask for the best price, but expect to pay a fair price for garbs that have been thoroughly cleaned, steamed and researched.

5. Location, Location, Location
Ornstein recommendeds the following places to shop across the U.S.:

Seattle: Heller's Cafe
Boston: Bobby From Boston
Los Angeles: L.A. Rose BoutiqueRose Bowl Flea Market and The Way We Wore
Dallas: Vintage Martini
New York: Cherry VintageRue St Denis and Olaf's Vintage

6. Look Everywhere Else, Too
Your parents' basement or attic are good (you never know what you'll find), and estate and tag sales are always a good bet — just make sure to go early for best the best finds (check EstateSales.net for nearby sales). For a more creative location, try church and temple sales, and local theater groups going out of business. Online is also good, just make sure the site has a good return policy and check the item's condition; don't be afraid to ask questions.

7. Know Your Fabric's Longevity
Cotton is most serviceable and wool lasts the longest, and while linen feels great, it is hard to maintain.

8. Know The Latest Vintage Trends
Plaids, madras and tweeds are the styles that designers are shopping for right now, Ornstein says.

9. Invest In Staple Pieces To Start
A good starter to one's vintage collection are coats and footwear. Tweed or cashmere sport coats, Burberry raincoats, well-fitting overcoats, and wingtips and penny loafers are great for every man. Also, oxford shirts and cashmere and Irish knit sweaters.

10. Know Your Vintage History
Brief history in vintage clothing periods and popular items:
1901-1919: suits, shoes, derby's, workwear
1920-1938: linen suits, overalls, collarless shirts, overcoats, panama hats, fedoras
1939-1946: military clothing, sports clothing, shawl-collar sweaters, pea coats, flannel shirts and jackets, Levi's, leather bags and luggage
1947-1964: gabardine shirts, Hawaiian shirts, Ricky jackets, motorcycle clothing
1965-1976: psychedelic clothing, leathers, velvet, mod, hippie and disco
1977-1989: punk rock, grunge, goth, hip-hop, leather jackets, T-shirts

Hawaiian Shirts & Ankle Bracelets.

So I was in Target the other day and I spotted this awesome looking gentleman. This man screams summer from head to toe. From the bad ass Hawaiian shirt to the ankle bracelets he's good to go. Looks like he’s got a solid base tan and that perfect beach blonde hair going already. Possibly just grabbed some bronzer? Who knows? But this man is ready for summer, can you say the same? I don't think so.
